elderly.jpgElder (Senior) Massage Therapy is much like nurturing, Swedish, relaxation massage with a few special adjustments for client comfort and safety.  Many elders have more fragile bones, even osteoporosis, so need to have a gentler touch in their therapy.

Some ways Elder Massage differs from regular massage:

  • Some elders may need to receive the whole session face down, as turning over can be a strain.
  • Extra attention is given to the hands and feet, as stimulation of the reflex points of the hands and feet support relaxation and circulation in the whole body.  Often our elders don’t have enough mobility to get exercise in their daily life, and gentle reflexology is a great way to stimulate the organs and glands of the body, through the feet and hands.
  • Elder Massage is sometimes performed with the client in a wheelchair, adjusting the techniques accordingly.
  • Fatigue and lower energy levels in the client may indicate that Elder Massage be shorter than a regular massage.
  • Health or mobility issues may require special care.
  • Reiki is a gentle, energetic healing method that is similar to ‘laying on of hands’, and works well with elders.  It calms nerves, reduces pain, enhances sleep, and gives a feeling of lightness and wellness.   It is well received by elders, and is incorporated into Elder Massage.
  • A lighter, gentler touch
  • A massage table that lowers to 18” so the Elder client can easily get on and off the table.

Elder (Senior) Massage benefits:

Everyone needs human touch to survive.  We have many research studies to document that fact.  And though we usually think of applying that knowledge to the care of infants and small children, it is equally important for adults!  Unfortunately, our Elders are often isolated and deficient in human contact and touch.  If you, or an Elder you know, needs therapeutic massage, give me call.
